Schools Offering Classes in Swedish Massage:
Swedish massage is the most prevalent type of massage offered by health spas in America, but its origins are not obvious. Apparently, Swedish massage did not originate in Sweden, nor was it created by a Swede.
A Swedish massage is defined as one that incorporates effleurage (stroking), petrissage (kneading), tapotement (striking), and frictions (rubbing). These French terms were used by the Dutch practitioner Johan Metzger when describing the Swedish Movement System which was created by Peter Ling, a Swede. The Swedish Movement System was later referred to as the Swedish Massage System, and because Metzger's descriptions were associated with the new name, people started associating the classic massage practiced by Metzger and others with the Swedish massage created by Peter Ling.*
Although the Swedish massage did not originate in Sweden, knowing how to give one is a skill that you can build a career around. If you want to become certified as a massage therapist, you will need to learn the Swedish massage treatment, as well as its health benefits. Your massage courses will teach you that Swedish massage help increase circulation and flexibility, which helps rehabilitate muscles and protect them from injury. Massage in general has been commonly accepted as good preventative medicine, which, if employed regularly, can help stem illness. It falls into the category of holistic medicine, which is gaining popularity as more and more people question the effectiveness of medication to truly get to the heart of illness. Many people are starting to realize that making healthy lifestyle changes is the only real way to curb many illnesses, and that medication or surgery merely masks health problems instead of solving them. Healthy living includes holistic practices such as Swedish massage.
