Sports massage is a type of massage therapy that concentrates on revitalizing worn muscles. Muscle revitalization generally means trying to work out the lactic acid that builds up in muscles after strenuous use. An excess of lactic acid in muscles is what causes soreness. Sports massage also helps increase blood circulation and flexibility, which helps to better nourish muscles and prevent them from tearing.
If you are looking to make a career change into massage therapy, you may want to earn a certification in sports massage. Sports massage training consists of learning basic deep massage techniques, but focusing more on how to best massage the muscles that get used the most during athletic events, such as shins, hamstrings, quads, the back, and triceps. In addition to learning specific massage techniques, your courses will teach you how to warm down an athlete by helping them work through stretching exercises. Learning how to provide a comprehensive sports massage treatment can lead to a number of career opportunities. Many professional sports teams employ massage therapists, as well as health spas and physical therapy clinics.
