Schools Offering Classes in Shiatsu:

Those that practice shiatsu believe that touching certain pressure points in the body help it undergo an energy rebalance. For this reason, shiatsu is quite complementary to other oriental medicines that center on the belief in a "life force," or underlying energy that exists in everything and is the source of health. This life force is called Chi in Chinese, and Prana in Sanskrit. Other groups have dubbed it an odic force, orgone, or bioplasma. The desired energy rebalance that occurs after a shiatsu massage is supposed to help cure illness.

Shiatsu, although most commonly understood to be a form of oriental massage, is considered by those who have made a career out of the practice to be an essential element for good health. Shiatsu practitioners believe that those who have been trained to balance and re-energize their life force can ward away illness. Because shiatsu is supposed to help channel this life force to various parts of the body, it is an essential tool used to teach people how to control their own life force.

If you believe in the rehabilitating attributes of a life force, you may want to attend a shiatsu training school. Courses in shiatsu generally focus on the study of pressure points within the body, and how those pressure points, when massaged properly, can help the flow of energy to deprived areas of the body. Whether or not you believe in a life force, studies have shown that shiatsu message improves circulation, flexibility, and reduces stress, among other benefits. Massage therapists schooled in other types of massage can propel their careers by learning shiatsu, because they will eventually be able to provide more varied services to their clients.
